Safety & Side Effects

BBL® is FDA-cleared with a well-established safety profile across Fitzpatrick skin types I–V. Interchangeable smart filters and calibrated energy settings allow for precise delivery while minimizing risk to surrounding tissue.

Common reactions Mild redness, warmth, and a sunburn-like sensation immediately following treatment — typically resolving within a few hours. Pigmented lesions will darken in the days following treatment before gradually flaking and fading — a normal and expected response indicating effective chromophore targeting.

Rare side effects Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, prolonged redness, blistering, or paradoxical darkening — uncommon when appropriate filter selection and energy settings are used for the patient’s Fitzpatrick skin type. Risk increases with active tan or recent unprotected sun exposure at time of treatment.

Contraindications Active tan or significant recent sun exposure; self-tanner use within two weeks; Fitzpatrick skin type VI; active skin infection or open lesions; pregnancy; photosensitizing medications; or history of keloid scarring in the treatment area.

Disclosure required Inform your provider of all medications — particularly photosensitizing drugs, retinoids, and anticoagulants — recent sun exposure, tanning history, history of melasma or previous PIH, and any known skin sensitivities.

Results develop progressively over 2–6 weeks following each treatment as targeted chromophores are eliminated and collagen remodeling progresses. Pigmented lesions typically show the most visible early change. Vascular improvement and overall tone and texture refinement develop over subsequent weeks. Individual results vary based on skin type, degree of photodamage, treatment frequency, and sun protection adherence.

Typical Treatment Protocol

1. Initial consultation and skin assessment — Fitzpatrick skin typing, evaluation of pigmentation, vascular, and texture concerns, and discussion of treatment goals and appropriate filter selection.

2. Pre-treatment preparation — skin cleansed, makeup removed, and protective eyewear fitted. Topical anaesthetic is not typically required; integrated cooling technology maintains comfort throughout treatment.

3. BBL® handpiece delivered across the treatment area using smart filter selected for the patient’s specific concerns. A warm, snapping sensation is typical during delivery. Full-face treatment completed in 15–30 minutes.

4. Immediate post-treatment care — cooling applied if needed. Moisturizer and broad-spectrum mineral SPF applied before the patient departs. Skin will appear pink and may feel warm for 30–60 minutes post-treatment.

5. Post-care instructions provided — strict sun avoidance and broad-spectrum SPF for a minimum of 2 weeks. Pigmented lesions will darken before flaking off over 7–14 days — patients advised not to pick. Follow-up scheduled.

For active correction, a series of 3–5 treatments spaced 3–4 weeks apart is recommended. Maintenance treatments every 3–6 months sustain results and support the long-term preventative benefit of regular BBL® therapy. BBL® is commonly combined with MOXI™ in a single session for comprehensive tone, texture, and pigment correction.
