BBL®
Sciton BroadBand Light Therapy. Light-Based Skin Rejuvenation. Corrective. Preventative. Proven.
BBL® is Sciton's BroadBand Light system, a non-invasive, non-ablative pulsed light therapy that corrects pigmentation, vascular irregularities, texture, and active acne with no downtime and results visible after the first treatment. The only light-based technology with published evidence of gene-level skin rejuvenation.

What is BBL®?
BBL® (BroadBand Light) is Sciton’s advanced pulsed light platform — a non-invasive, non-ablative technology that delivers broad-spectrum light energy across a range of 420–1400 nm through interchangeable smart filters. Unlike traditional IPL devices, which operate at a single fixed wavelength with limited customization, BBL® spans a wider visible and near-infrared spectrum — enabling precise, versatile treatment of a broader range of skin concerns in a single device.
BBL® operates on the principle of selective photothermolysis — delivering calibrated pulses of light energy that are selectively absorbed by specific chromophores in the skin. Melanin absorbs the energy targeting pigmented lesions and sun damage. Oxyhemoglobin absorbs the energy targeting vascular structures responsible for redness, flushing, and visible vessels. The absorbed light energy converts to heat — destroying or reabsorbing the targeted chromophore while leaving surrounding tissue intact. In addition to targeted correction, the controlled thermal response stimulates fibroblast activity and collagen production, improving skin quality and resilience over time.
BBL® is the only light-based technology with published peer-reviewed evidence demonstrating gene-level skin rejuvenation. A landmark study led by researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, found that BBL® treatment restored the gene expression pattern of aged skin — with approximately 1,300 aging-associated genes shifting to more closely resemble their expression in younger skin. A separate long-term clinical study found that patients who maintained a regular BBL® treatment regimen over 5–11 years were rated by a blinded panel of physicians to appear up to 9 years younger than their chronological age. No other IPL device has demonstrated this depth of biological effect.
Why choose BBL®?
Precision across conditions. Interchangeable smart filters and finesse adapters allow your clinician to target melanin, hemoglobin, or both within a single session, addressing multiple concerns simultaneously without changing devices.
No downtime. BBL® is non-ablative and non-invasive. Most patients resume normal activities immediately following treatment. No wound, no peeling, no recovery window required.
Versatile coverage. BBL® treats large areas, including the full face, neck, chest, arms, and hands quickly and comfortably. Finesse adapters allow precision targeting of small, isolated lesions without affecting surrounding tissue.
Beyond the surface Regular BBL® treatments don’t just improve visible appearance, published research demonstrates that consistent treatment induces gene expression changes in aged skin, shifting cellular behavior toward patterns associated with younger, healthier tissue.
Potential benefits
Pigmentation Correction
Selective photothermolysis targets melanin-containing cells in sun spots, age spots, freckles, and areas of uneven tone, breaking up surface pigment that gradually darkens, flakes off, and fades over the days following treatment.
Vascular and Redness Reduction
Light energy absorbed by oxyhemoglobin collapses fine vessels responsible for facial redness, rosacea, flushing, telangiectasia, and cherry angiomas, improving overall evenness and tone.
Skin Texture and Quality Improvement
Collagen stimulation triggered by the controlled thermal response progressively improves skin texture, pore appearance, and surface quality over the weeks and months following a treatment series.
Active Acne Clearance
BBL®’s blue light wavelength targets the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria responsible for inflammatory acne, reducing active breakouts without medication. A three-step protocol using blue, yellow, and infrared light is used for more comprehensive acne management.
Preventative Aging
Forever Young BBL® Regular BBL® treatments slow the accumulation of photodamage and, uniquely among light-based devices, have been shown to induce gene-level changes that support long-term skin health and delay the visible progression of aging. The Forever Young BBL® protocol is designed specifically for patients committed to proactive, long-term skin maintenance.
Skin Tightening
SkinTyte Infrared wavelengths delivered in the SkinTyte protocol penetrate deep into the dermis to stimulate collagen and elastin remodeling, improving the appearance of mild laxity in the face, neck, and body without ablation or downtime

What to expect at your visit
1. Medical history review, Fitzpatrick skin typing, and photograph documentation of treatment areas.
2. Discussion of filter selection, treatment settings, expected pigment response, and post-care requirements.
3. Protective eyewear fitted; skin cleansed and prepped. Comfort level confirmed before treatment begins.
4. BBL® treatment delivered by the clinician. A warm, snapping sensation is typical, discomfort is minimal due to the integrated cooling system.
5. Moisturizer and mineral SPF applied before departure. Pigment darkening response explained and written aftercare provided. Follow-up scheduling discussed.
Frequently asked Questions
How is BBL different from standard IPL?
Standard IPL devices operate across a narrow wavelength range with limited customization — typically requiring more sessions to achieve results comparable to BBL®. Sciton’s BBL® spans a wider spectrum with interchangeable smart filters that allow precise targeting of different chromophores within a single session. BBL® is also the only pulsed light technology with published evidence of gene-level skin rejuvenation — no standard IPL device has demonstrated this depth of biological effect.
Why do my spots get darker after treatment?
Darkening of pigmented lesions in the days following treatment is a normal and expected response — not a side effect or complication. The targeted melanin absorbs the light energy, oxidizes, and rises to the surface before gradually flaking off. This is the process working as intended. Patients are advised not to pick at darkened areas and to allow natural shedding over 7–14 days.
How soon will I see results?
Initial improvement in skin tone and clarity is often visible within 2–3 weeks as pigmented lesions shed and vascular response settles. Continued improvement in texture, collagen quality, and overall luminosity develops over 4–6 weeks following each treatment.
How many treatments do I need?
For active correction of established photodamage, a series of 3–5 treatments spaced 3–4 weeks apart is typically recommended. Many patients see meaningful improvement after 1–2 sessions. Ongoing maintenance treatments every 3–6 months sustain results and support long-term skin health — particularly important for patients following the Forever Young BBL® protocol.
What is Forever Young BBL and how is it different from a standard BBL treatment?
What is Forever Young BBL® and how is it different from a standard BBL® treatment? Forever Young BBL® is a specific treatment protocol designed for long-term preventative skin maintenance rather than active correction. It uses lower, full-face energy settings delivered consistently over time to maintain skin quality, slow photodamage accumulation, and based on published clinical research support gene-level changes that keep aged skin behaving more like younger skin. It is best suited for patients committed to proactive, regular skin health maintenance.
Can BBL be combined with other treatments?
Yes — BBL® is commonly paired with MOXI™ in a single session for comprehensive skin rejuvenation, addressing both pigment and tone through BBL® and surface texture and uniformity through MOXI™. It can also be sequenced with HALO™, neuromodulators, and injectable treatments as part of a broader rejuvenation plan. Your clinician will advise on optimal sequencing and timing.
Is it suitable for all skin types?
BBL® is appropriate for Fitzpatrick skin types I–V with proper filter selection and energy calibration. Fitzpatrick type VI skin is not a candidate for BBL® treatment due to the high melanin concentration and associated risk of adverse pigment response. A thorough consultation is required to confirm candidacy and select appropriate settings for your skin type and concerns
When to Schedule Your Treatment
Plan your treatment 2 weeks before you want results to take effect, and at least 6 weeks ahead of any special event for optimal results. Maintain your results with treatments every 3 – 6 months.
