Safety & Side Effects

Botulinum toxin type A has one of the most extensively documented safety profiles in aesthetic medicine. All three formulations are FDA-approved for cosmetic use and administered in precise, controlled doses well below therapeutic thresholds.

Common reactions Mild redness, swelling, or pinpoint bruising at injection sites — typically resolving within 24–48 hours. A mild headache following forehead treatment is occasionally reported and resolves within 24 hours.

Rare side effects Asymmetry, lid ptosis (eyelid drooping), brow ptosis, or unintended spread to adjacent muscles — rare when precise anatomical placement is used. Typically self-resolving as product metabolizes.

Contraindications Known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin or any product component, neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, active infection at the injection site, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Disclosure required Inform your provider of all medications — particularly aminoglycosides, muscle relaxants, and anticoagulants — previous neuromodulator treatments and products used, neuromuscular conditions, and any history of adverse reactions to botulinum toxin.

Typical Treatment Protocol

1. Initial consultation and facial assessment — evaluation of muscle activity, movement patterns, existing lines, and treatment goals. Product selection and dosing discussed based on anatomy and desired outcomes.

2. Pre-treatment preparation — skin cleansed and injection sites marked. Topical anaesthetic available on request, though most patients find treatment well-tolerated without it.

3. Neuromodulator administered via fine-gauge needle at precise anatomical points. Treatment typically completed in 15–30 minutes depending on areas treated.

4. Immediate post-treatment assessment — injection sites checked; ice applied if requested. Patients advised to remain upright for 4 hours and avoid rubbing or pressure on treated areas.

5. Post-care instructions provided; follow-up appointment offered at 2 weeks to assess result, confirm symmetry, and perform any minor touch-up if indicated.

Maintenance treatments recommended every 3–4 months for Botox® and Dysport®; every 6 months for Daxxify®. Consistent treatment over time may allow for dose reduction as muscles respond to regular relaxation.
